How Accurate are Soil Moisture Meters?

Soil moisture meters are widely used to measure soil moisture levels, but how accurate are they? The accuracy of soil moisture meters can vary depending on the type of meter, the soil conditions, and the calibration of the meter.

  • Capacitance probes: These probes measure the electrical capacitance of the soil, which is affected by the soil moisture content. Capacitance probes are generally accurate within 5% to 10%.
  • Tensiometers: These probes measure the soil water potential, which is a measure of the energy required to extract water from the soil. Tensiometers are accurate within 1% to 2%.
  • Neutron probes: These probes emit neutrons, which are slowed down by water in the soil. The slower the neutrons, the higher the soil moisture content. Neutron probes are accurate within 2% to 5%.
